But some women experience unusually known as postpartum hemorrhage. Definition: Primary PPH refers to excessive bleeding that occurs within the first 24 hours after giving birth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ijrcog.org\/index.php\/ijrcog\/article\/view\/6601#:~:text=In%20India%2C%20PPH%20incidence%20in,and%206%25%20following%20cesarean%20section.\">Incidence rates:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/a>In India, the incidence rate of women getting primary PPH is between 2-4% for vaginal deliveries and 6% for c-sections.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. It is one of the leading causes of PPH and almost 70% of PPH cases are because of uterine atony. Without sufficient contraction, the blood vessels in the uterus remain open leading to excessive bleeding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"contributing-factors\">Contributing factors&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24010-uterine-atony\">Various factors <\/a>can contribute to uterine atony such as&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is your first baby or you\u2019ve had 5 babies in the past<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You delivered&nbsp; a large baby<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ve had a twin or a triplet delivery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re older than 35<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have too much amniotic fluid<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obesity<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"management-and-prevention-strategies\">Management and Prevention Strategies<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Uterine Atony cannot usually be prevented. If you\u2019re at risk of developing uterine atony then your healthcare provider will take precautions to manage excessive bleeding. You may be given medicines to promote uterine contractions. Management often involves manual removal of the retained fragments, through dilation and curettage (D&amp;C), or, in severe cases, surgical interventions like uterine artery embolization or hysterectomy.
