Pineapple is said to have an enzyme called bromelain. It messes with the uterus and can cause uterine bleeding or even miscarriage. 

Pineapple is rich in Vitamin C, but, unfortunately, pregnant women should avoid it. You can always have other fruits rich in Vitamin C such as oranges.

Papaya

Unripe or partly ripe papaya contains latex. This component is considered to induce uterine contractions, which cannot be safe for the fetus. It may also weaken the vital membranes of the little one growing inside the Mommy. Ripe papaya is however considered safer because it has much less quantity of latex.

Grapes

Grapes are a good source of water and antioxidants. Then why are they considered unsafe during pregnancy? The antioxidant called Resveratrol is said to be harmful to fetal development. But this is true only if it is consumed in very high quantities. When taken in moderation, grapes are pretty safe to have during pregnancy.

Fruits With High Sugar Content

If you are diabetic or prone to high sugar levels during pregnancy, it is usually advised by doctors to avoid fruits with high sugar content. Fruits such as mangoes, bananas, jackfruit, grapes, cherries, dates, and pomegranates are high in sugar content. If you just want to keep your sugar levels under control, you may have these in moderation. However, if you are diabetic, take your doctor’s advice before consuming these fruits.

This easily available fruit is a rich source of potassium. They also help avoid constipation during pregnancy. Constipation is a common tagalong of pregnancy and can cause extreme discomfort to the Mommy. Therefore, taking a small portion of a banana (if not full) every day can be very beneficial.

  • Watermelon

It is very important for pregnant women to be hydrated. There are several reasons for this. It helps with their gut, hair and skin, and their kidney. Fruits like watermelon are high in water content and are very good for the mother. However, if you are diabetic, take some expert advice before consuming. Cucumbers also have high water content.

  • Orange

Rich in Vitamin C, Oranges are also a great source of water. It helps in the development of the fetus, such as in bone development. It is also said that too much Vitamin C is not good during pregnancy. So, try to keep a balance with other fruits that have a lot of Vitamin C too. 

  • Pomegranate

This fruit has a good amount of antioxidants. They are great to build the immunity of the mother and the baby. Pomegranate is a supremely healthy fruit.

  • Avocados

Avocados are a source of potassium and magnesium apart from several vitamins. Some women also find it helpful in getting rid of nausea. That is a bonus benefit for sure.

  • Berries

All kinds of berries such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries are rich in antioxidants and must be included in the diet of pregnant ladies.

Tips for Safely Preparing and Consuming Fruits During Pregnancy

Eating healthy during pregnancy is not a choice. It is a necessity for an expecting mother and her little one. Fresh fruits and vegetables are your best friends, especially during pregnancy. These sweet, sour, and bitter plant products can give you all the nutrients that your body needs during this time. It may not be easy for everyone to get all fruits, but always try to include at least 3 types of fruits in your daily diet.

Consuming Fruits During Pregnancy

Here are some tips for you to prepare and consume fruits safely.

  • Rinse the fruits very well multiple times to get rid of any soil or traces of chemicals that may be sprayed on them.
  • Fruits like apples are best when eaten with the peel, but if you are concerned about the chemicals sprayed on them, better peel them off before consuming.
  • Try to source fresh and seasonal fruits. Avoid frozen fruits.
  • Most fruits do not cause any harm if taken in moderation. After all, they are just fruits. Portion control is the key here.
  • For your daily intake of fruits, try to combine 3 different types. For example, strawberries, mango, and oranges can give you a good variety of nutrition. Mix and match to your liking.
  • In case you are getting bored of having raw fruits, try to make salads with different dressings. Spice things up a little!
  • If a particular fruit makes you nauseous or sick, avoid forcing it. It may have been your favorite all these years, but probably your baby doesn’t like it.
  • It is best not to try any fruit you have never taken before becoming pregnant. Contracting an allergy now would not be a good idea.
